Stomach Upset - HELP!!!
« on: August 13, 2010, 08:03:50 PM »
Hello,

I've been on the FTS program now for a week and have lost 5 pounds (about another 115 to go).
It's not been easy... My wife is not yet sold on FTS and my 30 year old daughter just moved back home.
There are LOADS of high-sugar high-starch foods around here... But I'm committed to losing my weight so I do not give in to the temptations. I do not allow my carb intake to exceed 25g per day. I was eating anywhere for 150g to 250g+ per day. If my weight loss stops (for 2 weeks), I'll decrease to 20g per day.I have been also taking 30-35 minute walks every morning (something I didn't do before FTS... I was VERY sedentary).

Anyway, the last three days, I've been experiencing some mild stomach upset with mild nausea.
It kind of feels like a 10 lb. lead ball in the bottom of my stomach.
The discomfort extends from my stomach down through my lower bowels. :'(
It's with me pretty much all day (and night) long.
It is not bad enough to disturb my sleep (Thank God!).

The carbs I eat are mostly in the form of fiber (e.g. green salads with shredded cheddar cheese).
The other carbs come from cream cheese (2g per serve), swiss cheese (1g per serve), almonds (2g per serve), etc..
I am not using artificial sweeteners.

Is this "normal" when switching to a low-carb lifestyle? If so, how long will this last?
Does anyone have any ideas what I could do for relief?
I've tried Maalox tablets but they don't work.

Many Thanks for the Help and Support!

Hi Mousissue,
I know how you feel, my husband will not attempt to grasp the FTS lifestyle either - but I am committed and what he does is up to him, I've decided.  As Doug says, we need to do this for ourselves, no one else.

Anyway, I also know how you feel re the stomach upset.  I've gone from the headaches, stomach issues to having the shakes.  Weird.  I think its all part of our system getting used to this way of eating.
This happened for a few days, after a week of the FTS lifestyle, thankfully it passes.
I have gone from diahorrea and cramps to um, the complete opposite.
I have had to take something to help "move" things along, so I took one, not two, but one Seneca tablet, which seems to help if required.
Hopefully this has helped, you're not alone at all, when I posted how I was feeling, everyone joined in with how they felt too.  Please stick at it, we have to stick together.

You could be experiencing sugar withdraw or you need more fiber!

Thank you Linda and beebs!

Since I eat LOADS of green (low-carb) veggies, have 1 low-carb high-fiber La Tortilla a day, and 1 GG Crispbread cracker a day, fiber is not the problem.

I think you're right about the discomfort being due to sugar withdrawals.

I just hope it goes away soon!
I don't feel like doing anything other than my daily walks.
And who likes nausea 24/7 ?

If anyone else out there has found a way to make it subside (even a little), I would be SO grateful!

You hang in there my friend, ever see a movie where a drug addict or an alcoholic goes through the DT's ? Your body is adjusting...it will pass soon, be strong and drink plenty of water to continue flushing your system. I'm proud of you for your self commitment, don't worry about your wife, just ask Gary (Katary) when the weight starts dropping off she'll jump in...stay the course.

Relief at Last!!!

My wife (God bless her) is doing her best to support me and she went out and bought me a liter bottle of Diet 7-Up and 4 low-carb fruit flavored yogurts at our local Fred Meyer (may be called Kroger in your neck of the woods).

I drank a glass of the 7-Up and it helped a little.
But when I ate the yogurt (3 net carb grams per container), within minutes my gut settled down and the next morning ALL stomach and bowel discomfort were gone.

I have noticed a few other mild withdrawal symptoms, but they have been nothing compared to the gut thing.

My wife has begun to notice that I'm eating quite well.
Food like salads, cheese on low-carb tortillas (heated), cream cheese on a GG crisp, etc..
I haven't gotten fancy yet cooking any recipes. But when I do, with my continued weight loss just might be enough to get her to jump on board!

Thank you all for your help and support!!!

I'm thrilled you're feeling better, the live cultures in the yogurt must have done the job.....who would have known... :)

Great news Mousissue, glad you are on the road to recovery.
For some of us, it isn't pleasant, but at least we've hung on in there!

I have been on FTS for almost two weeks and I am feeling great.  I would like to be losing weight at a faster rate, but hey, I'd also like to win the lottery.....lol
