Flax Seed
« on: January 30, 2014, 06:49:56 PM »
Okay, so I was talking with my husband the other day and we were talking about flax seed meal.  Crushed up golden flax 'seed.'  I think it is generally a great product.  When you read about it, I don't see much wrong with eating it.  He seems to think that since it is a 'seed' and he compared it to apple seeds that are toxic, that I should stay away from it, as it may also even cause kidney stone issues.  I generally listen to what he has to say, but I don't feel the logic in this one and he isn't a 'seed' expert in regards to the 'components, enzymes, toxic, non toxic' attributes in every seed on the planet.  So I ask the FTS folks, what do you think.....?

I am a herbalist. Here are the facts.Flaxseed is wicked high in omegas. But until it is heated the omegas are not released,so sprinkling it on yogurt or a salad is useless.Making bread or baked good releases the omegas. So cake made from flaxseed is actually heart healthy.Apple seeds are said to be toxic but I have ate them and I am still here.As well as Comfrey, which is great for menopause, I drink 2 quarts a week. ;)

So adding milled flax seed to a protein shake does not provide the benefits promoted?  I did not know that.  I guess I will continue to use them in my OMMs, but not in my shakes.  Thanks UMPA.  As always, a wealth of information.

Hi, Ellie! :)

Not ALL seeds are toxic.

Consider sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
Flax seeds fall into this category.

I'm still perfecting the flax seed recipe, but here's the almond one.

Crust
1 tbsp almond flour(my daughter, Mary, likes hers with 2 tbsp)
1 tbsp Parmesan cheese
1 tsp oil
1 large egg

Preheat oven to 425
Mix all thoroughly. In a non stick pan cook batter like pancake, both sides until lightly browned. Place from pan to a cookie sheet for more than 1 pizza or pie pan for 1 pizza.

Top with sauce, veggies, meat. top with mozzarella cheese, then Parmesan and lastly garlic powder.

Bake in oven for 15 minutes. Cut into 4 pieces. Carb counts depend on your toppings.

Pizzas I've made:
Pepperoni, sliced olives, onions, mushroom.
Walmart great value Alfredo sauce, chicken, broccoli.
Ham, very little fresh pineapple(we are maintenance), a few cashews.
(If you want to try these, please look up your own carb count)

I made 8 pepperoni pizzas and froze them on a cookie sheet for a couple hours, then transferred to freezer container. Mary prefers to have them fully cooked, then froze so she can pop them in the microwave. She says they taste good that way.

I gave it a try and really love it.  this past Sunday I made six crusts and froze them and brought them to work.  i'll defrost in microwave then add the toppings and then place in the toaster oven.  everyone at work loves how it smells and are jealous lol!   I sometimes have a salad with it or just by itself.  Thanks so much for the recipe.  I am hooked!  Have a nice day Susie!

So glad it worked out for you! We still eat them ourselves. I'm going to make chicken alfredo pizzas today.
