HELP!!! Doug told me to post this question on the forum!!
« on: March 22, 2012, 12:56:49 PM »
Today is day 8 on the FTS plan.  I've had the symptoms I previously posted off and on for the last week.  Last night however I experienced new symptoms that sort of shocked me.  I woke up from having a nightmare and was shivering.  This morning I felt drained and sort of like I had the flu again.  Did any of you experience this?  It has me concerned.

Hi Sandra!  Welcome to the forum.  When I first started FTS and was going through detox, I do recall telling my husband that I felt like I had the flu!  I didn't shiver like you did, but I did feel achy and lethargic.  Maybe someone else will chime in.  I sure hope you aren't coming down with something.  The pollen here in North Georgia is enough to make anybody sick.   Everything is YELLOW!   :)

I'm not sure of number of calories your body needs per day, but I do
know from pass gym and physical training I always heard if you consume
less than 1000-1200 calories per day your body will go into a starvation
mode and weight lose will stop and your energy level will take a serious nosedive.
Ask Doug's advise and option on this , he knows a lot more about this that I do
and has a list of experts he can talk to also.

I haven't really been counting calories but I think I'm consuming that much if not more daily.  I don't think it's starvation.  I'm not hungry at all.

I remember when I first started I actually woke up abruptly sitting straight up in bed full of what felt like anxiety 10 nights in a row! I had to go out at 2, 3 in the morning and walk it off. My guess is sugar withdrawals but you should keep a close watch and check in here often to keep us informed of whats happening just in case something else is going on.

Buford, the whole starvation mode theory in my opinion is bunk. Take a look at any anorexic or bulimic actress and tell me the weight is staying on them  :o :o

Doug, I was thinking that very thing today! I saw a woman who looked like a walking skeleton. Not attractive at all. I feel as bad for the skinnies as I do the fatties. Too bad we're all not just somewhere in between.

Sandra, I can't help as I didn't have any detox symptoms. I did it pretty slowly, though. I know when I had something sugary before I totally committed to FTS, I would get a sick sinking feeling and be sweaty and nauseous.

Hi Doug! :)

Not to be contrarian, this is what I believe happens in "starvation mode";

First, by not eating enough, the body senses a "famine" and responds by conserving as much energy (FAT) for as long as it can.
If one continues to not eat enough for a long period, the body will begin to burn stored energy (FAT) as well as muscle and organ tissue.

Burning fat AND muscle AND organ tissue for a very long period will eventually cause emaciation (i.e. looking like a skeleton with skin).
That French model is clearly emaciated!
This is what happens to people with anorexia or bulimia. Left unchecked, it can cause major health problems and be fatal.

By sticking to the FTS rules, one can avoid all this and lose the FAT but conserve muscle tissue.
This is healthy weight loss. :)
What you do today is what matters!

Tony , you and I are of the same opinion and it is well documented all over the
internet. I did a lot of reading and based my opinion on the documentation I found
there and one article in particular reinforced my strong belief in the low carb lifestyle.
The link to this article is below. There in the very first paragraph I believe the question is
answered why you can eat a normal calorie load and still lose weight living a low
carb lifestyle like FTS. This has worked for me and I assure all I don't count calories
and my meals are of normal size for a man of my size and body build and I am still
losing weight every week, however my carb load for a day is 20 grams or less everyday
without question. As always this is my opinion based on my own research
I will always welcome any discussion based on facts uncovered counter to mine.

The one thing I've never been able to track down in my study on the starvation mode issue is time. How long a time period will the body try and hold onto fat.  My sense is there's a big difference between not eating at all vs eating lets say the equivalent of 500 calories per day, which I would never promote for discussion only. Then we have activity level to add into the party when doing the analysis. Will a bedridden persons body enter a starvation mode scenario on 500 calories per day...if so how quickly and for how long. Will an active person experience a completely different body response.

To many unfounded "if" factors in the mess for me to take the theory as a scientifically sound element in the long run of weight-loss more of a short term stumbling block which cannot last....WHY, simple really, most all studies I've read do agree that your body will scream at you for food when you're starving and of course that leads to eating. In this particular case Sandra reports that "she is not hungry at all".

Sandra, if you're reading this how are you feeling today?

Doug,

You are 100% correct there are just to many ifs and the level at which
the "Starvation Mode" cuts in varies by 100's of calories and the time
it takes your body to reach said level, depends on your source of information.
However one thing is absolutely true,  no other lifestyle change as caused
so drastic and immediate weight lose for me as Low Carb and FTS is leading
the charge to move that viewpoint and lifestyle to the forefront.

One day some college who is not funded by "Big AG and /or Big Sugar"
will get it right and then FTS will mean (Found the Solution).
Please keep up your message and good works,  I am proud to know you
and UMPA and support you whole heartly.

Buford and the Girls(The Cold Nose Gang)

The problem with 'starvation mode' or shorting yourself on food for a long period of time is that as soon as you start eating again, your weight just sky-rockets. That's the key to FTS success - replacements so you never have to starve yourself. Alternatives.
