Desserts and Sweets / Re: Candy Crunch

Hi there,

Just a quick question about Shoelace.  You have some great recipes here but you only show as a guest.

Are you a member here?  The reason I ask is that I like to click on a member and check their posts - but cannot do that with your posts.

I also recall you were on another forum and had been writing a recipe book.

Did you ever complete that project?

Hi to all,

I just found about a site that looks promising.  As I'm in Australia postage will be a bit expensive but I'd like to try some of the products listed on their site.

Here's a link to their xylitol products.

http://www.naturesflavors.com/diet/xylitol-products?limit=all

They also have some low carb products and erythritol products.

I am hoping there might be some people here at FattoSkinny who have tried some of the products and can let me know what they are like.

I have sent an email to the naturesflavours people requesting a list of all their low carb, xylitol and erythritol products with full nutritional data (on their site some products have this and others don't).  Hope they get back to me as I'd love to try some of their stuff.

Morgan, you might also be interested as there looks like a lot of variety that we do not have in Australia.

Thanks Umpa for offer of help with recipe conversion.

My issue is more about sourcing basic products with low or zero carb count.  Very little available here in Australia.

I have purchased the bakery book and the regular cookbook and the product book.  Great reading!

Have purchased zucchini and hope to make your carrotless carrot cake in next day or so.

Hi Morgan,

Yes, I've seen the Sugarless Company products.  I tried the white chocolate and loved it.  BUT!  Regretted it afterwards.  The darn malitol - packs a putrid punch.

No malitol for me anymore.

I can eat the The Well Naturally milk chocolate without any side effects - just have to watch the portion size.  A bar is 45 g and around 4c I think.

I am going to research cocoa more fully over Easter and will let you know how that goes.

Thanks for the tip about cocoa and copha as Baker's choc substitute.  Will add that to my bag of tricks.

I do order things from Amazon every so often.  Hating waiting for overseas deliveries to arrive though - gosh I'm impatient!

Will keep you posted of any good finds (hopefully local).

Hi there,

Hope you are over the "munchies".  I agree that adding some more variety may help.

For me making a nice roast with LC gravy fills me up and dampens the cravings down.  I allow myself roast pumpkin - the rest of the family have that plus roast potatoes.  I also have steamed veges - usually brocolli and green beans.  The "roast smell" wafting from the oven adds to the feeling of contentment.

Hope some of the suggestions by others has helped and that you are now over the worst of it.

Hi Umpa,

I use cocoa daily (hot chocolate or choc shake).  Every little carb saving counts.

While we do have at least one good online store in Australia for low carb products (www.lowcarbcentral.com.au) our supermarkets have nothing that is specifically low carb.  It is very hard to find anything sugar free that does not contain malitol and similar "tummy" issue products.  I keep waiting for the low carb penny to drop...taking a long time I must say.

I mostly use regular foods (meat, veges, cream cheese, cream, frozen berries) but it is nice to have a good supply of low carb items to supplement things.

I would order the Lion zero carb cocoa if it was available online - have not found it anywhere so far though.

Another thing we do not have here is unsweetened baker's chocolate.  The closest I have found is cooking chocolate but it contains about 55 c per 200g block (similar to Lindt).

We Aussies just have to be more inventive to keep things interesting.  Sites like yours help tremendously!

Hi there Doug,

Happy to have found your books and this wonderful forum.  Yes, Morgan and Tony have been a great help as well as others here at the FTS family.

Happy travels!

Hi Morgan,

Thanks again.  Your experience echoes mine.  I am constantly on the hunt for good low carb foods.  I am an avid label reader also.

The lowest carb cocoa I have found is Van Houten (I get this from local Foodworks supermarket).  It is 11c/100g.  I think I have also had the Homebrand (can't remember which supermarket that was) and from memory think it was about the same count as Van Houten.

I have also not found any LC cream (I use cream in coffee - wish there was an LC one available).

Wherever possible I try to stick with unprocessed foods -not an easy task.

I have purchased Doug's product ebook so will have a good look through that and may have to order stuff online from USA.

Good luck Stephanie,

Brings back memories of when my children were young.

It's amazing what mothers can achieve!  You can do it.

Hi Morgan,

Sorry for all the questions - which flax do you get from iherb?

Also, lowcarbcentral.com.au is still running in Australia but lowcarbzone.com.au has closed down.

Will check out iherb today.

Hi Morgan,

Thank you for sharing the sites you order from!

I tried a health food shop in Sunbury yesterday for golden flaxseed (apparently there is a shortage at present - might be some available mid week).
Also went to Safeway in Sunbury - unfortunately no luck there either - checked all the macro sections.
Think I will just order online.

I will have a look at the other sites you mention as well.

Again, many thanks for sharing!

Hi Morgan,

I think I will do the same as you once my FTS Zero Sweet arrives.

Have you tried the PerfectSweet Xylitol here in Australia (available from most health food shops) and if so, is there any taste difference with the FTS Zero Sweet?

Taste is such a subjective thing.  Many reviews on Amazon about a variety of sweeteners and so many different opinions.

I am looking forward to receiving the FTS Zero Sweetener and hope my tastebuds like it.

I'm also on the hunt for a zero carb cocoa - I posted about that on a separate thread.

No doubt about it - a love affair going on here with sweet chocolate flavours!

Hi there Tony,

I am really looking forward to the FTS Zero Sweet arriving.

I've tried a lot of sweeteners.  Here in Australia the best one so far for me is PerfectSweet Xylitol.  It has no aftertaste and does not have the cooling effect I've heard people mention when discussing xylitol.  But it is made in China (which can sometimes be a concern) and is expensive.  Even though it is a sugar alcohol I do not suffer any tummy ill effects.  I have also tried another product called tagatose (purchased from netrition) that tastes exactly like sugar but unfortunately each time I have used it I have had tummy issues.  I was hoping tagatose would be a good substitute as it caramelises just like sugar (but can brown quite easily in baking).

I am always hunting for perfect substitutes in my quest to make low carb as pleasant as possible.  Hopefully FTS Zero Sweet works for me like it does for so many others here.

Hi there,

Check the label on your cocoa Rena.  I use Frye's cocoa and it is 0 carbs.  The store brand NoName has carbs, they must have fillers in it.

I saw this post about cocoa with zero carbs - is it available online anywhere?

The lowest carb cocoa I can get here in Australia is 11.4 g of carbs per 100g.

Would love a "no carb" cocoa!

Hi Morgan,

Yes, a very small world!  Was in Sunbury just today trying to find golden flaxseeds.  Apparently there is a shortage.

Think I will have to order some online.

I also need to find a good sugar free vanilla extract - any tips?
