General Discussion / Re: Sugar Makes You Dumb and Forgetful
« on: August 21, 2014, 07:05:35 PM »
Hi guys/gals! I love coconut oil. I use it in place of butter in most recipes. I have MCT oil for salads and such because it stays a liquid even in cooler temps. My grandma passed away in February from Alzheimer's which was sad because my mom knows about MCTs and how it helps Alzheimer's patients but my grandmother and her medical proxy wouldn't hear anything about it. It's a loaded family subject but I try my best to take extra care of my brain and heart because there's brain and heart problems all throughout my family so I'm taking no chances! Thank you for the article. I had noticed that if I slipped off the wagon into sugar land I'd be about as forgetful as can be and clumsy too. Weird. I'm much more efficient and quick and coordinated when I'm off sugar in its entirety. Also my skin is perfectly clear without sugar whereas if I have any I will break out. I'm almost 40 and figured I was too old to get acne, but not so when sugar is involved I guess! It's an interesting subject to be sure...

Hi everyone! Sorry I have been sort of off the radar for a while. Tony, thanks for the recipe, I will have to try it! I only just got my first bag of chia a week ago. :-) Now I can put them to good use. :-) I've had some health issues with my heart (not heart disease, a congenital defect) so I've been pretty much off in my own world but I've still been watching what I eat. I've just not been trying to lose anything because of the different meds I've been on. I had no idea how they would affect me. Now I've got things pretty well worked out and I'm on the mend.

So I'm also working back to getting back to jogging too. I'm taking it easy though, my heart is very cranky about new activity. However the cardiologist says it can't hurt so I'm giving it my best but my jogs are maybe two times a week and it's really more of a walk/jog at this point until I get back in shape. I'm working the couch to 5k program. It's slow but I'll get there! I'm back to wanting to lose a couple sizes but honestly, I'm feeling more self accepting of my curves these days. Life is too short to be worried about being a size 10 when it may never happen for me. I'm tired of obsessing over unrealistic goals. It's the process I need to enjoy...you know smell the roses and all that. ;-)

I Like Hunts tomato sauce, it's only 3 net carbs per 1/4 cup...one of the lowest I've found on the market. I spice it up the way I want it and BAM! Italian night :)

That's the same one I use, Doug! Good stuff. I've definitely learned to read the ingredients. I used to just grab one thinking it was just tomatoes and boy was I wrong! This way of eating really has made me check every label!!!

I finally got around to making this (I doubled the recipe) and it's yummy! Thank you! It goes very well with chili. Perfect texture for it! :-)

I've never tried them. Thinking I should throw some into my daily diet for good measure. :-) I saw a decent hot cereal recipe with them in there a while back...I'm gonna go look it up now...

Hi Michelle, I'm Noell & I'm a newbie too.  I wish you much success with all of your goals.  Just keep at it :D  Take care.
Hi Noell, thanks! I wish you success with your goals too. :-) I've been so super busy with family commitments I haven't logged on here much the last few weeks. Lots of good changes. My stepson has come to live with us and he's involved in sports so that's taking a lot of my time I wasn't expecting but it's been lots of fun going to his games and watching/learning the game (lol I know nothing about football). His team has been winning most of their games so I'm excited for him to be a part of such a great team. His coaches aren't the types to tell or scream and they are just great! It makes me wish my older kids had been involved in sports during their youth but they were very antisocial for some reason...this boy is a great addition to our family dynamic and I'm happy about it. :)

Thank you! I made shrimp and red pepper Alfredo tonight for dinner and everyone loved it and oh my it was sooo good!!! I even finally felt good enough to run a couple miles tonight on the treadmill. We have been inundated with smoke here from the Yosemite fire so no one is going outside much. I felt surprisingly great considering the last time I ran was about 4 weeks ago. I didn't have to stop and walk once and I could've run more but I figured I'd ease back into it lol. I walk a lot more now at work - each trip between buildings is a quarter mile round trip and I walk about 1-1.5 mi per work day just because of that which is a new thing for me. I'm crediting the walking with not losing fitness. Yay! Everyone else is catching a cold in my house. Crossing my fingers I don't get it!

I am glad you figured it out. If you are allergic to anesthesia you should have a medical alert bracelet with your allergies on it  ;)
Oh my goodness what a great idea! I never thought of that! Thank you! I will look into it!

My Dad has congestive heart failure and the doc limits him to 2 quarts of fluids per day...no more.
that is interesting, thank you for sharing that. I've actually found limiting my fluids harder than I thought it would be. Surprising but true. Instead of snacking I would sip water to keep myself busy but now I've discovered pumpkin seeds lol. I'm addicted! :) I can't eat the super salty ones though. Yuck. I like the Spitz brand, they're seasoned and very good. Not the best ingredients for seasoning but its so small an amount I consider it ok. It hasn't made me gain weight or gain water weight and the fiber is also beneficial. :) It says 8 grams of carbs and 8 grams of fiber. Score!
