Title: Dry Skin, Hair thinning, nails brittle
Post by: izzet on July 09, 2010, 08:45:13 PM
I am having a problem with all of the above topic.  I found this on a hospital website after I went and talked to a knowledgeable person at my local health food store.  I've started taking a new multi-vitamin that also has large amounts of biotin and other minerals, and herbs for these problems.  My hair has thinned so much this last month I can see my scalp very clearly and my part has widened.  My thyroid and hormones are fine. ;)  This guy I know says that hair thinning is more often than not a direct result of inflammation due to stress or diet.  I have been under stress the last week or so but not the entire month.  I will probably start adding flaxseed oil back into my protein shakes in the morning.

Just wanted to pass along the information.

"If you suffer from chapped lips, brittle hair and nails or flaky/dry skin, increase the amount of "good" fats in your diet. The good fats are omega-3 fatty acids, which are an important part of human nutrition. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish and omega-6 and omega-9 are found in soybeans, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flaxseed and primrose oil."

The best herbs for hairgrowth are horsetail root(silica) ,biotin, and msm.I take them all everyday.I take 5000 mg of msm everyday. But not only will you grow hair on your head you will be shaving your legs alot too! :D I love flaxseed! I eat it everyday! I make brownies out of it! :)

That's great because the vitamins recommended have horsetail, biotin but not msm (sulfer).  I'll look into that.  It's suppose to replace your multivitamin.  Futurebiotics Hair, Skin and Nails. http://www.futurebiotics.com/product.php?pid=1&cid=1 (http://www.futurebiotics.com/product.php?pid=1&cid=1)

Let me know if the amounts are enough for the horsetail and biotin or if I need to find another brand.

I also just bought a new conditioner that really gives me volume (I tried it this morning) so it doesn't look quite so thin, which was surprising.  Most times more than not they don't work but this did. Fructise Fortifying Body Boost conditioner.  I usually stick to organic/natural shampoos and conditioners but they haven't worked well.

BTW which form is best pill or powder for the MSM-can you recommend a brand?  I ws looking at Drs Best or VitaminShoppe brand.

Thanks so much for the info! :)

Hey Friends, If we are eating better and healthier, why would be losing more hair?

Have a great day!

People lose hair for all kinds of reasons.Stress and genetics are the prime cause. When i removed meat from my diet a few years ago my hair was thin and breaking.i wasn't getting enough protein.Once I got back on the protein it came back thick and beautiful! I used to do hair when I was younger and I worked for Regis salons and another cause we saw was overprocessing.Perms, haircolor, and blow drying. :)

yeah I've been trying to air dry my hair instead of blow drying, etc. and been taking all the vitamins & supplements you recommended.  It's not coming out as bad but still thin on the top and sides...the back of my hair is very thick...wish I could just move it around lol  I eat a lot of protein through shakes and meat.  I use to be vegetarian about 10 years ago but I've been eating meat again for a while.

I pull my hair up in a ponytail barrette almost every day for work would that also pull the hair out or damage it?  I try to be gentle and not pull it very tight and then give it a break every two or three days and just use a hair band to pull it back out of my eyes.

Hope you are doing well.

My hair is really fine. It used to fall out a lot because of my thyroid problems but  my medicine is right now and I take an uber vitamin so it's much better.

Umpa, If I take a multi-vitamin for people 50+, and if I want to have a full head of hair (feel like I am losing some) then should I take the msm 5,000 mg and/or anything else?  Thanks!

IZZET i just realized i missed one of your posts.Pulling your hair up in a barrett or ponytail if you have thick hair is the worst thing you can do.If its thick no higher on your head then the nape of your neck.It will cause major breakage.Only use ouchless products, with no metal. If its thin in the front but thick in the back you may have breakage and not hairloss. ;)

Hi Susie! Yes you should be taking 5000 MSM in addition to your multi vitamin. It will grow hair (all over) and is great for your joints.I also like for hair biotin and silica. All 3 of these are cheap at swansonvitamins.com.I take all 3 of these every day along with my other vitamins. ;)

Umpa do you take 5000 or 500 mgms? The msm on the Swanson site shows 500 MGM tablets.  Am I misunderstanding something?
