Title: april 12th
Post by: katary on April 19, 2010, 10:21:28 AM
i bought the book on sunday April 11Th,read it cover to cover and started on Monday April 12Th,after 1 week i am 11 lbs lighter and feel soooooo much better. A little backround,i lost my job on Jan.22ND and took it as sign from the man upstairs that it was my chance to get my health back!!! for 2 1/2 months i was exercising and watching what i ate,but lost ZERO lbs, i was very frustrated!!!! I went to Barnes and noble and looked thru ALL the health/fitness offerings and FAT TO SKINNY was the only one that i found that i felt i could commit to. I am nowhere near where i want to be (started at 275lbs minus 11=264lbs) but i am completely zoned in to the program...i will keep ya posted weekly on my progress!!!!! thanks Gary

Same question to you Gary,  if someone is on THE FAT TO SKINNY program and reports they are not dropping weight what would be your words of wisdom to them?
Title: Re: april 12th
Post by: katary on April 26, 2010, 01:25:32 PM
my 1st response would be " are you counting carbs correctly?" and secondly "are you eating huge amounts of low carb (http://www.fattoskinny.com/low-carb-diet.htm) foods?" and thirdly "are you active at all?" any or all of these 3 things can and will determine how well the FAT TO SKINNY program works for you. when i 1st started 2 weeks ago not only did i count carbs i also counted calories, and i didnt use my "new found energy" to watch tv or play on facebook,i increased my activity level. now after 2 weeks i am only counting carbs, and only eating when i am hungry, i know when i am ready to stop eating, and i put whats left in the fridge for my next meal. when i get up in the morning its black coffee, and i dont eat till i am hungry be it 10:00 am or noon...right now its 1:30 pm and i still am not hungry yet...so off to walk the pooch...maybe i'll be hungry when i get back!!!! c ya

PS>>this program is a life style change...not a diet !!!

mid-week update: i am really putting the pedal to the metal this week, all my carbs(<20) are being consumed prior to 5:00pm and after i eat i am doing some kind of activity to burn those carbs after 5 all i am having is SF jello or SF popcicle & h2o>> i am taking a break from trying to discover new recipes and concentrating on my main goal,(although i must say during this time i have stumbled upon some ideas)another big test for me is coming this weekend, for mothersday the whole family is going to my favorite rib joint:( and they have the best bread in the world...i've made up my mind that i'll be having the halibut & a salad...wish me luck!!!

I truly do wish you the best in this endeavor!
I was wondering, though, couldn't you ask for ribs without barbecue sauce?
Title: Re: april 12th
Post by: katary on May 06, 2010, 12:30:20 PM
LOL i could, but in the old days when i got the ribs>>> i would ask for the biggest bowl of extra BBQ sauce they had>>> it just wouldnt be the same:(  but hey i like halibut now if i could get the other 14 people at the table to give up the bread i'd be in great shape:)
*** but that just wont happen***

OK Joanne here is how my day went today ;D started the morning with 3 or 4 cups of unflavored black coffee...then did about 30 minutes worth of stretching, followed by 3 sets of 30 situps(OK i am bearing my soul here...the first week i could only do 3 sets of 5) i plan on trying to increase that by 5 per set per week.then for brunch i had 2 slices of my bread(last 2 pieces) each topped with a piece of baby Swiss & prosciutto ham toasted in the toaster oven, and some olives and pork rinds on the side and a diet coke w/lime for my drink.after that i walked my big sweet puppy for about 3 miles...(she has lost about 10 lbs on this plan as well)after the walk i came home and whipped up a new loaf of bread(trying sour cream & chive this time) while it was baking in the oven i grabbed 2 slices of sharp cheddar and rolled it up with cappacolla ham,had a sugarfree jello cup and just drank h2o.then my wife got home from work and i took her for a walk :)  and after i type this last line i am hitting the showers and sitting down to watch a little TV with a sugarfree Popsicle ;D  by my count that's less than 2 carbs for today(i am counting the black, unflavored coffee as 0 carbs)

;D well i made it thru with flying colors..while everbody else was chowing down on the bread&ribs i stuck to my guns and ordered blackened chicken breast and cut it up,to top my salad with!!! lol every fat person at the table said"you'll never loose weight that way,if you don't allow yourself to eat what you like sometimes you'll end up falling off the wagon and then you will gain ALL the weight back plus more" ENABLERS!!!!! always want you to be like them>>> how many times have you heard that? afterwards we went back to my moms & while they devoured sugar filled desserts, i took all the kids to the park(walked there & back) and i even spent about an hour swinging on the swings:) it was a blast...tomorrow is weigh in day..hope i get a good # !!!!

I am soooooooooooooooooooo jealous it's been 3 weeks as of Thursday (tomorrow) and all I've lost is 8lbs...I stick to portion sizes...only eat when hungry...have an active job....the only thing I can think of is sugar alcohols...one diet soda every few days, sugar free candy...maybe one or two a day and carbsmart popcicle every night.  The first week I hadn't discovered I could have diet soda and candy and only ate SF jello w/whip.  Back to the drawing board and cut out the alcohols & soda and see if that works.

you have been a great encoragement!

11 weeks of my new FTS lifestyle and i have broken through the plateau!!!! after going back to the drawing board, doing a reread, and giving myself an inspiring PEP talk,I woke up to step on the scale this morning and find that I am down 7 more lbs to 219 ;)>> so from 275lbs 11 weeks ago to 219lbs today = 56lbs of FAT off into thin air, that leaves me 19 more lbs to shed to reach my goal of 75lbs  :D
THANKS to Doug,Umpa & all of you for the support!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Gary, I finally arrived back home and have watched your video. I find it heartfelt, honest and giving. I'm asked all the time how I keep up the FAT TO SKINNY pace and my answer is always the same,

"If you had a cure for cancer could you keep it to yourself ?" "I have the cure for obesity and sugar diabetes and I CAN"T keep it to myself!"

I know how you feel man and I'm proud to see you "paying this forward"

as i sit here....i am thinking to myself,is it possible that almost 4 months ago i weighed 275 lbs? and i answer YES it is a fact:( that i was so not in control of myself that i allowed that to happen....this morning i stepped on the scale to see a wonderful # 194 lbs...whats that ???????? 81 lbs of FAT that i have shed since April 12Th. and i must say i am very .....fulfilled in this accomplishment, but i find myself reading other peoples situations and feel like i need to help everyone else,if anyone reading this doubts the way FTS works, please let it into your life, embrace it, &  discover yourself:) it is the real deal:) today i saw 2 people that i have not seen since i committed to FTS & both said that i was too skinny:) of course they are both very over weight:( i have found that even the closest people in my life have tried to derail my progress..... by trying to persuade me to change my life, and to EAT things that would hamper me in meeting my goals...long story short..... dont believe what others say....dont fall into their trap....they will only hurt your chances of success.....stay strong & you will reach your goal & find yourself:) that's it:) c ya:)

Not sure what besides jealousy would motivate someone to say you are "too" skinny when you lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/).  My sister told me I looked like I had anorexia after I lost 45 lbs.  I told her that I didn't think that likely at 5'6" and 160 lbs.  Gary, your success is astounding and just goes to show what we can do when we really make up our minds to get serious about taking control of our own bodies and health.  You are a great inspiration. You obviously have a good heart to show so much concern for others too!  :)

WHACK......THUD..... that's the sound of me hitting another plateau & and then hitting the floor:( in my 18Th week, i have gained 2 lbs:( 196 lbs is the # that freakin scale gave be back today as i stood there hoping to hit my goal weight of 190 lbs :( at 1st i wanted to cry:( but then i didn't want to look like a girl :) .....( that's a joke ladies) but i have to believe that its just a temporary setback.... i didn't eat anything bad at all this weekend, i was as active as i ususally am, blah blah blah ...... I'll take my own advice and "buck up" :) hoping that next Monday I'll see better results....okay so that puts me at these #'s 18 weeks FTS,started at 275 lbs,at 196 lbs, lost 79 lbs..... and I'm complaining????? maybe another reread is in order???

Congrats Gary....now lets talk maintenance if you wish to stay where you are. Begin slowly......very slowly. add 10 carbs back into your eating plan per week until the scale stops moving down. once you stabilize stop and see where you are in your counts. Stay within that range and keep weekly weighins until you're comfortable that you've found your personal balance point.

I suggest you always stay away from refined sugar foods and grain based foods like breads, pasta etc... You have broken the sugar addiction but it WILL come back if you eat these types of foods. , instead decide what fruits and veggies you miss the most and add one per week into the party.

I find myself very comfortable on maintenance, I enjoy Umpas low sugar baked goods and candies for sweets, an apple a week (usually takes a week to eat one) and I rarely if ever break the 20 carb per day intake point. For me breaking 20 carbs per day will make the pants get tight....been there done that...don't want to go back.  >:( Your help to the other members of this FTS family has been and I'm sure will continue to be invaluable and I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say thanks and;

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is going to sound silly, but I saw somewhere to put something over your face like a mask and then look at yourself in the mirror.  We find it hard to see the new image and still see the old one.  Supposedly with your face covered you can look in the mirror with a critical eye, because you are just looking at a "body".  This may help you see what others see.  From the pictures you posted you don't look anorexic, they are probably just jealous that they are not where you are.  Congratulations again on reaching your goal.  You seem like a pretty determined guy so I am sure you will do well with maintaining this for the rest of your life.

This is not a diet it is a lifestyle change.Once you clean the poison out of your system keep it out.You will only find the amount of carbs you can eat after you lose your weight by adding them back until you start to gain.It is the only way to find your number.Thats all you are doing Katary.Find your number. This is where the scale will help. ;)
Title: Re: april 12th
Post by: katary on September 08, 2010, 04:42:57 PM
uhhhhhh.... yes i know its not a diet:) i have ZERO thoughts of putting the poison back in...lol i am zealotlike in that regard... i am searching for my "number" i just thought it would be at least 20... but i guess its less than that:(
Title: Re: april 12th
Post by: umpa on September 08, 2010, 04:50:32 PM
I know you know Katary but not everyone reading this does :D That number will vary after you settle into your new body and dependant on activity level. When i work out i can eat alot  more carbs then when I am working at my desk doing contracts.I adjust my carb level depending on what activities i am going to be doing. This is only for people though that have lost their weight not people still trying to lose.We should probally have a maintanance board though because there are alot of people that have lost their weight already. ;) i will bring it up to doug

Hi Pal, sorry for the delayed response, crazy busy schedule has kept me away from the forum this week. Here's the deal, it sounds like you have the same metabolism as I do....walk down the bread isle and BAM!! two pounds come on  :o. I've found over the years that I must stay under 20 carbs per day to maintain my weight, I actually rarely exceed 15. This is never a problem for me because as you know we've replaced and continue to replace every type of food we want and I eat great. As you know I'm not a couch potato...I'm an active guy and you also know I detest the gym. I refuse to get into a habit of eating that REQUIRES exercise to battle the food. To me that's a sure fired way to end up FAT again...why....because getting older, or hurt or simply slowing down and falling out of a scheduled exercise routine is inevitable so why set myself up for failure. In my mind staying thin WITHOUT the requirement of exercise makes far more sense. That way if I do find myself more sedentary in the future I'm already eating to stay thin. Make sense?

I'm sure as you move along you'll find your happy spot, when you do it will be easy...easy....easy...to maintain.  8)

Soooo did I read in another post that 34 inch pants are loose on you :) That 32 inch waste I predicted for you is in sight!!  ::)

Hi There Gary!

Looking great there young man!!!  :) :) :) :) :)
You are a true inspiration to the rest of us!

As was said before, your body is adjusting to the new you.
So don't be too freaked out about the small ups and downs.
Just follow Doug's advise and allow what you eat (not exercise) dictate your weight.
After you system settles down with the new you, you may be able to eat more carbs than you think.

Now about the brewsky...
The same thing happened to me a week or so ago when I had a few beers one evening.
I otherwise stayed true to F2S and lost 1 pound by the next morning anyway.

I also noticed a 3-day weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) "delay".
By otherwise staying true to F2S caused another several pounds to fall off after the "delay".

However, I know that those nasty "carbs" are evil sneaky devils and can fool you. >:(
And knowing that alcohol increases blood triglycerides, it makes me leery.
That's why I've resolved to not imbibe in the brew (or other alcohol) more than once a month.

Keep up what you're doing and you'll be there before you know it!

Katary, I heard on the John Tesh radion program that when you go for a job interview to lean in towards your interviewer when you speak.  He said that is some kind of body language that says you are a go-getter.  I also am job hunting so I usually listen when he talks about job interviews.  Here is a link to his website that has job interview suggestions, maybe something will help.

Nice hearing from you Gary!
I hope all is well with you and your's.
I'm also happy to hear that you are still at your goal weight.

A good way to "keep the faith" in this lifestyle is to pick up objects (like bags of pet food, potatoes, etc.) and compare the heaviness we feel lifting them to the weight we've lost.

This really brings perspective to those conceptual objects (numbers on the scale) with reality.

I recently picked up a 20 lb. sack of potatoes at the store and was very encouraged.

I look forward to picking up 40 lb. bags of dog food for the experience!... It won't be long!

Next time you look at the kibble check out the first ingredient. You'll find in most cases the first ingredient is cornmeal! I always buy dog food for the kids that has the first ingredient as turkey, chicken or lamb.
Title: Re: april 12th
Post by: mouseissue on September 27, 2010, 04:18:25 PM
The breeder who sold us our miniature schnauzer (as an 8-week old pup) said to NOT feed him any dog food with cornmeal (or other grain) as the first or second ingredient.

She also said, coincidentally, to look for the first and second ingredients being turkey, chicken, soy, or lamb. She also indicated that most of those name brand expensive dog foods (heavy with grains) really are not very good for dogs (or anyone else for that matter).

The rule of thumb is be sure the first (preferably first two) ingredient(s) is/are protein based.

He's now five years old and as healthy as ever!
So it's always been, and will be low-carb for our pooch!

Good luck on the job Gary!!!  :) :) :) :) :)

Looking forward to Doug's feedback on this.
But according to my doctor, if you are otherwise healthy and test for ketosis after fasting for 12+ hours and show ketosis, it means you are burning body fat. Otherwise, it's the result of burning (and not storing) energy from your last meal.

I bought some Ketostix to test for ketosis.
I usually test first thing in the morning once a week be sure my body stays in fat burning (ketosis) mode.
According to doc, as long as even a few ketones are present, my body not storing any fat and is actively burning it.

Hi Gary, first let me say I've got my fingers crossed for you with the job! I've been on maintenance now for about 5-6 years and my weight fluctuates up and down 10-15 pounds depending on my activity level and my portion intake. I bounce in and out of ketosis all the time as will you. When fat burns ketones are present....and there's always a bit of fat to burn :) It doesn't surprise me that you're still leaning out stored fat even if the scale has leveled off. Your body will replace tissue with additional lean muscle mass from the high protein you're still eating and the exercise routine you're on. I wouldn't give it a second thought.

By the way I just had my blood drawn and my triglycerides were 64 :)

;) its official ....started a new job yesterday:) piece of cake (no thank you) LoL ...packed my little cooler full of ice cold H2O... took a bag of almonds and out the door i went:) prior to my FTS success i would have walked out of the door empty handed & just stopped at every other truck stop for a mountain dew, bag of Doritos, maybe a couple of cheeseburgers....you know the drill... bottom line FTS can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be!! excuses are a dime a dozen>>> a lean healthy body...well its within everyones reach:) but its soooo easy to say.........."nah I'll start tomorrow" "this wont hurt me" "I'm not that fat" "just a little bite" "what's the use" "i cant live without bread" "winter is approaching,my fat clothes will make me look and feel better" "the rest of my family wont eat this way" "this is the millionth time Ive tried to lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/),its not worth it" "i like being fat" "I'll wait till new years & make it my resolution....again" "i am a happy fat person, its the way God intended me to be"

i think that's a dozen excuses...got a dime?

Nice to hear from you again!

For me, losing weight was always the easy part... Keeping it off was IMPOSIBLE!.

:) Tony it has been very easy to maintain so far.... due to time constraints my walking time has been cut from hours everyday to 30-45 minutes per day,but i do it religiously each and everyday:) also i make time twice per week for about 1-1.5 hours on the boflex and that's it as far as exercise goes...food wise i really don't even count carbs any more,i just don't eat any foods that i know are high carb and i don't over eat, those 2 rules along with the minimal exercise have kept me where i am:) i really don't even feel tempted to stray under any circumstances... even today it is hard for me to wrap my brain around where i was 6 months ago & where i am now,i pulled out all of my "fat" winter clothes the other day OMG.....to think this past winter my fatass was bursting out of those things... today both myself and my wife.....hell and maybe even a dog can fit in them all at the same time....and still have room to move around:) well it is just unbelievable :) StAy aWay FrOm tHe cAnDy nExT WeEkEnD!!!!!!! ... StAy aWay FrOm tHe cAnDy nExT WeEkEnD!!!!!!! SuGaR KiLLS!!!!!:(

Hi Gary!

Before I started the F2S lifestyle, I had a MEAN >:( sweet tooth!
Almost EVERY NIGHT after dinner, I would eat 8-12 Mars candy bar Mini-Favorites or 4-6 oz. of Jelly Bellies.
On other nights it was some other high-carb high-sugar dessert.

Now, most nights, I have a sugar free 0 carb Jell-O gelatin cup (sometimes with Redi-Whip).
I will occasionally have other low-carb deserts as well.

Thanks to F2S, I no longer find it difficult to say "NO" to the sugary treats. They don't tempt me at all like they used to.
Before, I almost always had to say "YES" to them.

After sugar detox... Everything changed!

Thank God for F2S!!!
 :) :) :) :) :) :)

Wow Gary!... Only 1 pound gained with NO exercise for almost 3 weeks!... That's fantastic!!!  :) :) :)

I find it so reassuring to hear such testimonies about F2S.
They tell me that as long as I eat right (i.e. low-carb), I do not need to fear regaining weight that I've lost.

It bears out what Doug said in his book about exercise and weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/).
That is, that we should exercise for good health but eat right for weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) or weight maintenance.

Yes Tony, that's so important to point out. If you do not exercise and are gaining weight look at the food first to resolve the weight problem then add the exercise if so inclined. This way you'll learn to eat the proper mix and quantity for your own personal metabolism and weight will never be a problem for you again whether you exercise or not  ;)

okay guys, exercise isn't the end all be all for losing weight,i know when i 1st started on FTS i was way too FAT to even fathom exercise....how ever i do believe that if you are losing weight and want to be healthy a minimal amount of exercise is warrented and should be implemented into your plan....but as Doug says its NOT a requirement to lose LBS. once you start losing though would it kill you to take a walk? or do some weight training? for me personally i feel tons better with some type of workout...no matter how minimal it may seem.....and you'll sleep tons better if you make it a regular thing in your life...it just makes your whole system function better if you ask me.....but the food choices are the most important.... find the lo-carb foods you like and stick to them.... if you re just starting out i would just find a core menu that you like and stick to it......and save the experimenting for when you start losing as opposed to trying all the different recipes right off the bat...you have to be committed and have the right mindset...starting and stopping and starting and stopping etc etc will not work, and the built in excuses that you've been using all of your life are super lame, but i will say that the forum members will always welcome you back with open arms...... just like you will always do in your own mind...even though you don't want to hear it,i must say it...YOU HAVE TO DO IT FOR YOURSELF.....we cant do it for you...... is it your time????? today....to find yourself??? or is this just another day where you lie to yourself & everyone else?????....blah blah blah read the book,it works....for me and countless others, the only reason it wont work for you..... well,is because of you.... do you want it bad enough????? or would you prefer to maintain your current FATNESS???? to me that is a stupid question......GoOd lUcK IN ThE NeW YeAr;) sorry if anyone is offended:(

I agree with Katary that you should start out with the basics.  You should learn the FTS program well before you start experimenting with all of the recipes.  The baked goods and sweets are meant as a treat or something to help get you through a rough spot, not as part of your every day eating plan.  We all aspire to be where Katary is right now.

life changing ......????? FTS is just that!!! my heartfelt ty's to Doug and this family for changing my life with the knowledge provided. that being said you cannot reach your goals by just "reading the book" no it's not that simple, you have to be able to adhere to the principles that Doug provides:) please don't let this be another time where you buy a book and then get hyped up .......only to lay the book down, forget about it,and continue to follow the path of obesity to your grave:(....this is the truth, and is factual, but if you yourself cannot take the time to read the book & dedicate yourself to a better life.....then you'll just be another victim of your own excuses & false reasons for being the way you are.....the way we are,or for many, the way we were. if you really want it for yourself...here it is,your chance to shed from your life the misery you've been living, don't kid yourself....it sucks being fat, don't let this moment pass you by,my life is totally different now than it was just 9 short months ago....and i wish the same for every soul that is on this forum, please for your own sake, make this the LAST time that you go shopping for a DIET book & commit yourself to this life changing way of living!!!!! or i suppose you could just keep killing yourself with sugar:(   really it is that simple....sugar makes you FAT & fat makes you MISERABLE...... cut out the sugar.........ReAd tHe boOk aNd LiVe aLoT lOnGeR :)

I'm not halfway to my goal, yet my life has already changed for the better...
I have more energy. I look better. I feel better. I AM better!!!

The Good Lord has provided a real blessing in FTS for anyone who wants it enough to grab hold of it and live it.
Anyone who wants this blessing badly enough, will receive it!

Thank you SOOOOOOOO much Gary ... I really needed that "personal" touch - to see a real person feeling real emotions and providing inspiration.  I am heading to amazon.com shortly to purchase the book.  I'm 59 and have been fighting this for so long, but the time comes when you just can't keep putting if off, and I'm so there.  It's still so hard, and it's been a long time since I've been any where near control of what I eat.  We go to see our grandson on March 12, so although I may still have to ask for a seatbelt extender, I want to feel better.  Again, thank you - you HAVE helped immensely and I look forward to being able to share my success too.

Great music, great video.

Wow ... what a wonderful warm welcome from all of you.  I am so touched and anxious to get going (book arrives tomorrow - yea!).   Perfect timing because it will give me time to read the book, figure out recipes I want to make, and go to the store on Saturday (live in a rural area, so the grocery store is 5-1/2 miles away - not a daily trip I tend to make).

Thanks again and can't wait to get going.  I'm not under any illusion that at least initially it will take some determination to get into the good eating habit, but as you all have shown, it absolutely CAN be done, and I'm definitely looking at a permanent change.  Love the videos that I've seen so far - I can see they will be very helpful.

Here's to success in all things!

I have to plan ahead, too. You can do it! Welcome to the FTS family, by the way, and welcome to your new healthy lifestyle! : )

a little over 2 weeks since i renewed my commitment to more exercise and i just moved my little ticker guy back 2 more lbs:)
    how sweet is that????
Doug i am contemplating getting back into the "weight losing" mode...maybe try to hit 180....or just try to hit that 32" waistline you keep bragging about:) i dunno.....maintaining is not as fun as losing:(
it was always cool to see the lbs coming off.... not quite the same just watching them stay the same,i was really happy to see 2 lbs go away....oh well I'm outta here:) i am off work today. and i am headed out to go shopping for my "SPEEDO" our Florida vacation is not too far off,and i want to look good!!!!!! Although maintaining weight may not be as much fun as losing, it's a fantastic place to be.  :)
I'm so happy for you Gary!  :) :) :)

Having a new goal of size 32 is great!
Once you reach it, think about this... You will never have to step on a scale again (except at your doc's office maybe)!

From that point forward, you will be able to use your clothes to tell you if your putting on weight.
And based on what they "tell" you, you can make adjustments in what you eat and your exercise until they fit comfortably again.

Freedom from FAT!... Freedom from the scale!... I can't think of anything more liberating that that!!!

Wow, Gary it reads like a novel this journey of yours.  I started reading and couldn't stop until I finished the last post.

I wonder have you reread your posts?

The hard work and dedication you have put into everything from losing the weight, gaining insight, getting 2 jobs, and now maintaining.  You make THIS all seem possible.

You have just single handedly killed every excuse possible for not doing it.

Thank you for allowing us to go through your journey with you.

That's great Katary, but you better knock on wood quick so you don't jinx yourself.  I've also gone through this winter without a cold (although winter isn't done yet, more snow coming Sunday).

i cant recall where the post was? so I'll post it here:) someone was talking about what was the hardest thing for you to give up while living  FTS.....well mine was without a doubt,an ice cold beer, for the first several weeks i completely swore off this once coveted beverage, but after getting the hang of FTS, i began imbibing again, that's what's so great about FTS....once you get the hang of it,you can control the affects of something like"beer"& still enjoy it,& at the same time not suffer the setback that it may have caused in the past,i find that as long as i plan for something like this, adjust my other carbs, increase my physical activity,etc......that no weight is gained:) planning is important,if you do it properly you can still enjoy some of your guilty pleasures:)
Title: Re: april 12th
Post by: mouseissue on March 26, 2011, 03:06:39 PM
Hi buddy! :)

I really look forward to the time that I don't have to be so stingy about having beer (i.e. only once per month)
and when I can do what you're doing and not get FAT.

Years ago, I was on some diet plan and lost a ton of weight.
Part of it was giving up (among many other things) my coveted beverage beer... altogether... FOREVER!!! :'( :'( :'(
Well, that did not sit well with me at all.

I distinctly remember the day I said to myself "Ah, the heck with it!!!" and started drinking beer too much and too often.
I was drinking beer like I still played college football and could get away with it... It did NOT work!
I allowed myself to slip back completely into the lifestyle that made me FAT in the first place.
What's so very cool... I KNOW that I won't have to do that again with FTS and still enjoy my beer.

God bless you Doug and FTS.
Not only did you save my life. But I will soon have a completely FAT-free new one too!

yes tony .....that is the best thing about FTS once you get to your "HAPPY PLACE" lol.....its so easy to stay there, dude, i honestly only step on the scale every couple of weeks or so,if i have gained a couple of lbs,all i do is go into lo/no carb mode until i hit my # again, but amazingly ive only had to do that a few times since i've been maintaining:) and 9 times out of 10 when i hit the scale im exactly where i was ...at my goal weight:) i mean its been almost 1 year since i found my way here:) and im still getting the "too skinny" comments from the peanut gallery:) lol....have a great day folks!!!!!

Hi buddy! :)

You're NOT a loser!!!

That 10 pounds is a reminder that you (like most all of us here) are a carb addict.

It's so easy to slip back into old bad habits.
Let that 10 pounds be a reminder to you the the old ways are no good!

Just come back to the FTS rules, and you'll be just fine! ;)

...Can't wait for spring to get outdoors, so tired of the New England weather

Hi Joanne! :)

I'm not fond of the Northwest weather.

Our daytime highs are usually about 10-15 degrees below normal.
And our nighttime lows are in the low 30's (should be mid to upper 40s).

I'm also getting tired of taking our horse's heavy winter blanket on and off in Spring.

Oh well... So much for global warming. :-\

alas.....the weekend has arrived, wow this work thing is a real pain in the BUTT:) honestly i don't think i would of been able to be so successful with FTS if i hadn't of been unemployed, while those were rough times, each and everyday that i go forward, i honestly believe that my life was forever changed by picking up FTS and embracing it the way i was able to do:) and if not for being unemployed i don't think that it would have happened...does that make sense??? i just cant fathom how fat and out of shape i was just over a year ago,and even though i am not that far removed from those times,it is impossible to imagine EVER being in that position again!!!!!!!!
taking a moment to BEG all of you readers out there that may be struggling,or not embracing FTS wholeheartedly,to continue forward and live the FTS lifestyle for the rest of your lives:) it is truly a Godsent for me:)
    also: Doug Thank You man:)
it has proved true every word you said, while FTS can be a challenge, living the lifestyle has soooo many benefits, and you were also correct on the exercise part, while i very much enjoyed the exercise, life throws a wrench into things, and well i haven't had any time to committ to exercise in over a month:( and as sad as it is for me personally,i haven't suffered a single pound of weight gain:) all because i am eating low carb,it is super easy to not get fat AGAIN:) like you've said its not a diet:( its a lifestyle:) and so long as i live it,i will never have to stress getting FAT ever again:)
so .....here's to being thin forever:) PeAcE OuT:)

Hi Gary! :)

It's so nice to hear that despite the trials of life and work, this lifestyle will keep you thin even without exercise!
Words like yours provide all the more reason why anyone needing to lose some weight (and keep it off) should embrace it.

God bless ya.
And I hope that your job demands ease up now and then so you can do what you enjoy a bit more!

Gary you are amazing!!  I hope everyone sees what you wrote.  I pray that BigJim could grasp hold to this lifestyle and hang on to it....for dear life!  (literally)  I was skeptical at first, and really just gave it a try for curiosity's sake because Donna (Owensmath) spoke so highly of the plan.  I'm a big girl, but when the scale went down TEN pounds the first week.....I was sold!!  ha ha  Now, it's just like second nature.  The FTS staples go into my grocery cart along with the regular food I buy for my family.  They won't eat this way.  However, it's SO worth it to me even having to cook separate for myself.   I am SICK of being fat and all the crap that goes along with it.....   Gary YOU are an inspiration to ALL of us!!!  Way to go DUDE!!!!!!  ;D

Hi Gary! :)

I hope you have MUCH more than a gazillion dollars.
Because, one should NEVER bet more than s/he can afford to lose.

Being around horses, I can tell you a that horse race is a horse race... It's ANY horse's race.

well truth be told i am considered the "activities director" but we always try to have fun..:)  the kids & i walked up to the store to get balloons & came across a wiffle ball/bat,as Doug would say "BAM"  hadn't played that in ......mmmmmmmmm,at least 30 yrs, we added that to the days events,by the time the night ended that wiffle ball looked like it was 30 yrs old:)
if not for FTS i would of sat my FATazz on the porch and watched from afar :( eating all the while:( i played all freakin day long, had a couple burgers off the grill, bunless rest assured, and turned up my nose at the strawberry shortcake:)
and here i am up early drinking my coffee, thought i would be a little sore, but nope, feel great!!!!!!
as a side note: the wiffle ball got stuck in a tree:( as did a football,a bat,a volleyball, and 2 bean bags, all of which we used to try to get the wiffle ball down...lol it was funny as hell, that's when we called it a night, all that stuff was still up in the tree when i left at about 1030 last nite...I'm still smiling just thinking about it:)

I'm back on the hunt, funny before the whole unemployment thing over 1 and 1/2 years ago I'd had 2 jobs in my whole adult life both for over 11 years, now i find myself very easily moving from 1 job to another without even blinking an eye, i cant tell if that's a good or a bad thing??? i just know that i am GlAd iM NoT FaT aNYmOrE:)

Hi Pal, I think you'll move from Job to Job until you find something that interests you enough where it isn't a job...if that makes sense to you. Like FTS is a lifestyle so our work should be. Ive always been a believer in designing my work around my life style instead of the reverse. Great to here from you!  8)

Hi Gary! :)

Most jobs are a pain the the a$$.
I guess many bosses believe that the more unenjoyable the work environment, the more you deserve the money you earn.
As a former "boss", I believe that thinking is bass ackwards.

Think long and hard about all the things you enjoy doing.
Then pick one, and find a way to make a living with it!
That's how I discovered the profession I enjoyed.

Like Umpa said... You'll find what you're looking for! :) :) :)

long time no chat:( but i couldn't resist running up the steps and telling anyone that will listen what just happened...... summer is over here in N. KY.:(  so the shorts are gone till next year, time to break out the jeans & long sleeves:( ...... anywho,i was very hesitant about putting on those 34" waist jeans & large sized shirts .... that i haven't worn for several months..... long story short,my lack of exercise for some time now has left me feeling fat, even though when i do my weekly weigh-in i have had very little fluctuation in my #, i still find myself feeling very self conscious about my appearance.... anyways both the jeans & the shirts still fit perfectly....just like the last time i wore them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I AM FREAKING ESTATIC  :) ;) :D ;D :o 8) :-*

That's too cool, Gary! :) :) :) :) :)

I'm not so sure it's the lack of exercise as it is the self-perception created from being FAT for so long.
How your clothes are fitting is evidence of that.

Our self-image is burned deep into our psyches.
So being (and seeing ourselves as) FAT for a long time will make us feel like we're still FAT, even when we're not.

Experiences like this help toward remolding your self-image.
As time goes on, this new self-image will be forged deeply into your mind... Then, you'll no longer expect to see Mr. FAT Guy when you think about your appearance! ;)

Hi Gary! :)

It's nice to hear your doing well.

Just remember, with some people... You can lead them to water. But you can't make 'em drink.

Regarding a new picture, I responded to that request from Umpa early this week.

You're so right, mouseissue! I was told that I'm round and chubby (and BIG) since I was just a little girl - I AM round, but wasn't chubby.  I've felt FAT almost all my life.  I look back at pictures taken through the years and see that I was perfectly sized! NOW I'm fat for real, but FTS is changing that! Also, I'm so bad at exercising consistently and have been searching for a plan that really works for me - not exercise based so that when you quit exercising the weight jumps back on, because that's my reality - no reliable exercise program. So, this Thanksgiving Day - one of the things I'm thankful for is the FTS plan and family. (Remind me of this when I'm whining about being stuck, will you?)  :)

better late to the party then never:)    MaInTaInInG my goal weight is at times more challenging than i thought it would be:( i sometimes don't step on the scale for weeks, and more than once i was disappointed when i finally did...... occasionally on the weekends i may let myself slip into the "its okay" mode & eat/drink something that i KNOW i shouldn't, only to do it again the following weekend....well after a few weeks the scale definitely lets me know i was an idiot!!!!!! i always eat lo-carb M-F which helps...but if i gain a few pounds i make myself go back into losing mode till i am back where i want to be,just this week alone i lost 7 lbs to get back to the new Me:) i think 3 weekends of being an idiot put me to that point.......I'm not talking about carbing out all weekend either, just 1 meal and some brewskies is all it takes to make the pants tight......thing is.... i know when to stop & what to do to get back:) and well..... you also have to be disciplined enough to not get addicted again:)  P.S i lost 30$$$$$ on the superbowl to my wife, and she's still rubbing my face in it:(

where's winter????????????? its definitely not here:)

Hi Gary! :)

It's great to hear from you again!

Being in the FTS lifestyle maintenance mode is cool.
Like you said, when you gain a few pounds, you know exactly how to get rid of them quickly... That's cool! 8)

But also like you said, we can't allow ourselves to slip back into our old ways.
Like "carb creep", it could start slowly as a only weekend thing.
Then it becomes every weekend... Later, every weekend and a day or two during the week.
Next thing you know, it's "Carb City" everyday and the pounds will come back on like gangbusters.

I believe the pants are a great indicator of how we're doing.
It does not take long for them to remind us that we are off course.

hey TEX sorry i don't hang out here as much as i should/used to:( but as said b4 welcome to FTS dude:) it works and just keeps on working!!!! once you commit to the LIFESTLYE:) your health in general & quality of life will get better by leaps and bounds!!!!! that goes along hand in hand with the weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/):) I've been maintaining forever and i also just recently (DEC 2011) banished the cancer sticks from my life, along with that decision i put on about 7 lbs in the last 3 months,i suppose it has affected my metabolism in some form or fashion:) so i am back on a mission to rid myself of 7 pesky LBS by vacation time in June, but given the choice of putting on 7 LBS or continuing to kill myself, ill take the 7 LBS and go merrily down the highway:)
also I've recruited another FTS warrior about 4 or 5 weeks ago a coworker(Jerry) grabbed the yellow book of knowledge from my hands and began the process..... he has lost 26 lbs so far,but has a long road ahead,I've told him to visit the forum but he has yet to do so.... Doug if Jerry commits and looses...... it will be a before and after picture for the ages:)  soooooo Jerry if you're here, say hello and get busy!!!!!!!!!!

The danger of driving a pink Escalade is that everyone will think you are a Mary Kay dealer.  That would not be good for the rep of a 16 year old girl.

;D hey everyone!!!!!! i am still alive and kick'in,lol close to 3 years have past since i started FTS, i have to say ive almost forgotten how fat i was.... i still weigh myself every day,and even though my exercise is at a bare minimum these days... mostly just walking when i can squeeze it in,my weight hasnt come back:) im still eating low carb, but i dont even count carbs any longer, i just know what i can and cant eat,and roll with it,just started ANOTHER new job this past week and it seems a little less demanding of my time, perhaps i'll be able to get back into a routine and get more workout time, i do FEEL fat/flabby sometimes.... but when i step on the scale it doesnt reflect my feelings:) and also its been well over a year since i quit the nasty smoking thing,i think i mentioned it,i didnt even get a sniffle this cold season!!!!! FTS does work... just takes a commitment on your part:)

************** Tony.....Yo Tony are ya out there??????
have you hit your mark yet????? did you post a pic???? i gotta see it if you have and i missed it.... let me know:)

Hi, Gary!!! :) :) :) :)

Great hearing from you again, buddy!

These last 7-10 pounds are stubborn as all get out.  But then, I've always been a slow loser.
And that's cool with me... My health is good, and I feel GREAT! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I guess it's well past time to update my pic here.  Have to find the digital camera and take a shot or two when I have time.

I still write down everything (& how much) I eat BEFORE it passes my lips.
Doing this for about 2.5 years, the habit is quite ingrained.  Plus, If my weight starts to creep upward, the record will clue me in on what may be doing it.  That happened a couple of times.  But the food log showed me what did it, and I made adjustments.

Looking forward to hearing from you again!

Tony

I can't remember the last time I had sniffles or a cold.
It would get so bad, I'd get sinusitis and bronchitis!
So glad those days are behind me!

Living FTS and NOT smoking makes a HUGE difference in our lives, doesn't it! ;)

as you can see by my UPDATED ticker I've been a very bad, fat, backsliding idiot!!!!! i can tell you all a million reasons for my stupidity, but I'm certain that you've heard/said the reasons that i would be listing many, many times before so i will spare you the headache... i knew i was getting flabby, but i just thought it was because i wasn't working out... maybe so, but long story short i am back here for support & to get back on track... to recommit so to speak, I've already walked 2 miles today & dusted off the bo-flex and gave it a 45 minute walk around the park..lol

so lets get this horse & pony show on the freaking road!!!!!!! I'm all in & i need to hit my goal by the end of may!!!!!!! peace out girl scout:)

Hi, Gary!

Although it's good to hear from you, I'm sorry to hear about your backslide. :(
But like Shawn and Umpa said, you know what to do.

It sounds like your focus moved away from what you eat, and toward exercise as the means to staying skinny.
Trust me friend... What we put in our mouths has FAR more influence than exercise.

Exercise is a good thing for our overall health.
But it's lousy for weight management (see Doug's book).

Focus on the carbs, portion control, and only eating when hungry and you'll be back at goal soon. :)
