Healthy low-carb, high-protein diet battles cancers: Study

Now there's yet another reason for a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet: it appears that cancer craves carbs and grows faster on simple carb sugar.

New lab-based research from the B.C. Cancer Agency shows that a healthy lowcarb diet not only slows cancer growth but may actually prevent cancer.

That's because most tumours feed on and need more glucose, a simple carbohydrate, to survive and grow.

"We found that tumours grew slower in mice that ate a low-carb, high-protein diet," says Dr. Gerry Krystal of the B. C. Cancer Agency.

"And, this diet not only prevented weight gain, it reduced cancer development and death in mice genetically predisposed to breast cancer."

Noted Krystal: "Any changes people make in their diets to approach a lower level of carb and higher level of protein intake will likely have a beneficial effect, for preventing both obesity and cancer."
